Food tripping at Binondo
Craving for authentic Chinese
dishes but is on a tight budget? No need to worry, there is a place that can
answer that concern and satisfy those demanding palate. Where else? You got
that right – Binondo.
The boyfriend and I love
to eat. No wonder we are gaining all these unnecessary fats. We are also one of
the living proofs that any food, when shared with the one you love, becomes
really delicious. So one fine day we decided to go to Binondo and try some of
the specialties in famous restaurants located in the area that we found out from previous blogs.
First stop: Lord Stow's Bakery
Name of Food: Egg Tart
Price: PhP 42.00 (2 pcs)
Rating (1 lowest, 5 highest): 4
Verdict: It tastes like Egg Pie but the consistency is much smoother and of course the crust is thinner since it is a tart. Moreover, the sweetness is just right.
Name of Food: Fried Chicken (Half)
Price: PhP 150.00
Rating (1 lowest, 5 highest): 3.5
Verdict: There can be a noted hint of sourness like that of a calamansi but not overpowering its oriental taste. It also has a slight buttery taste that may come from the breading or on the way it was cooked. The chicken was also cut into bite size pieces which makes it easier to eat and can accommodate 3-4 people.
Third stop: Shanghai Fried Siopao
Name of Food: Fried Siopao
Price: PhP 17.00/piece
Rating (1 lowest, 5 highest): 3.5
Verdict: What makes it different from our usual Siopao is that it has golden brown base, which we assumed is the reason why it was called "fried" but it does not have a taste and feel of cooking oil, if you are wondering. We are still in deep thought up to this day why it has been coined that term. The meat is finely shredded unlike the typical chunky pieces we know and the taste was made special through the inclusion of herbs.
Fourth stop: Wai Ying
Name of Food: Roasted Duck Rice
Price: PhP 180.00
Rating (1 lowest, 5 highest): 1
Verdict: I'm half-hearted on whether I just don't appreciate duck meat or that the way it was prepared is improper. In the way I remember it, they were not able to take the "fishy" taste away, thus the rating 1.
Name of Food: Siomai
Price: PhP 70.00
Rating (1 lowest, 5 highest): 4
Verdict: Okay, so what is not to like with Siomai? It tastes perfectly the same from the other common Siomai in the market.
Name of Food: Hakaw
Price: PhP 76.00
Rating (1 lowest, 5 highest): 5
Verdict: My most favorite among the selection, Hakaw. I love shrimps and I'm certainly delighted on how chunks of it were placed inside that mini dumpling. These are the times I am really thankful that I don't have any allergies to seafood, it's so delicious!
Adding up all of it, we spent PhP 535.00 for our lunch, not bad for the different variety we had. Since most of the items we ate was in Wai Ying, we bought the upper three first before heading there so we could fully enjoy eating and can appropriately judge the food. We will definitely go back and try other restaurants in the area, not to mention do some small shopping at Divisoria too. =)
(Note: These blog was a long overdue post since we went there last June 29, 2014.)
